RE: IPhone in Barcelona
Jun 22 2008, 3:25 AM EDT I am using a Yoigo SIM in an (opened) Vodafone PCMCIA 3G/GPRS module. I am browsing right now in Port Vell Barcelona and downloading an entire newspaper at the same time. My Net Meter is showing peak of 55kB/s with up to 30 seconds at a time of near total dropout. Last night, I had excellent Skype calls over an hour or so. I also have Telefonica WiFi access which is good but pricey (€12 per 24 hours seemingly unlimited as I am a fairly heavy user - 250MB to 1GB in a 24 hour period. However, Telefonica seems to have a Port 25 block making it impossible to send POP3 mail. My AOL and Hotmail (using Outlook Connector) accounts sort of work but at a snail's pace. My guess is that it is deliberate because as soon as I connect via Yoigo the problem goes so it seems unlikely to be a problem with my configuration or system.
The problem with Yoigo is that in many places (I have travelled from Almeria province up to Barcelona, along the coast in a boat) there seems to be no 3G or EDGE service available so the connection can be almost unusably slow. Outlook has trouble with those speeds and I have to use Airmail 3 which is designed for ultra-low bandwidth connections.
Can't answer your question about the iPhone, tho' ;)
