Hey guys,
Just spent 3 weeks in Spain and I thought I would give you the low down on the prepaid Sim services:
1) Yoigo- Best overall value. I use fringe a lot and Yoigo pretty much gave me wall to wall coverage on the Camino de Santiago from Sarria to Santiago Compostela. And at 1.50 euro a day, that pretty incredible value.
2) Vodafone-Second best value. From where I went, (including Picos de Europa Area in Asturias) they had the best 3G coverage. Plus, thye give you all these free credits and stuff. The major kicker here is I am now in Greece, and I am using fringe using my Vodafone.es sim here. Pretty cool. Get the data plans that are practically unlimited on a weekly or monthly basis.
3) Movistar-could see no major difference with them and Vodafone. Plus the tariffs are expensive and they don't give any freebies.

I see this was over a year ago, but I had bought one last year in Sept - tried to just buy the sim and they did try it with my unlocked 3 dongle in the store in Calais, but it wouldn't work, so I ended up buying a dongle - then €99 - and was told that if I needed - next year (this) I could just buy the sim for 29.90 - well this year on 1st Sept I was again at Calais, only they no longer sell just the sim anyway, even if you have the hardware, so I had to buy another dongle, exactly the same - but for €29.90 - so same price .... daft or what... and am still not too happy with it. There is now no longer a €75 topup online or instore.... and I used it purely for emailing.... Carol

OO44''s French Data Bundle as alternative to internet max?

I spend several months in France each summer and need daily internet access to monitor my business.
Internet max did the job this summer but now its gone, for next year I've been looking at the french data bundles from the UK simcard company 0044 at around £60/month. The main drawbacks seem to be
1) the need to purchase their Orange F dongle for around £100. However there seems to an option on their website to purchase a data bundle on its own. Presumably this could be used with an unlocked dongle with the appropriate APN settings????
2) per month means the 1st to last day of each month - this wouldn't be a problem for a long term user like me but not much good for someone going ,say, from last week July to first week August.
Anyone got any experience or thoughts on this?

It's frustrating that the Orange Mobicarte offering has changed - and even more frustrating that it's now unclear what you will or will not be charged for. I've have kept a Mobicarte SIM active for some while and used it for Laptop/Dongle internet when in the country. Now I'm seriously wondering whether to bother. If I instead roam my normal UK Vodafone SIM, I pay only £5 per day for up to 25 Mb, with no port or user agent restrictions that I'm aware of. SO, for short trips, why would I bother with a French SIM ?
Still, FWIW, there might a couple of tricks it might be worth testing with Orange Mobicarte (and other providers who impose arbitrary filters of this sort)
One is to browse using FIREFOX with the USER AGENT SWITCHER installed and set to emulate "Opera Mini" (or whatever browser you think is 'free').
The other is to subscribe to an SSL VPN service, used by many to hide their country of origin (eg for iPlayer) but useful also because the network only ever sees you accessing SSL Port 443 which is always unfiltered. Hence they can't even tell if you're accessing email. You also get some data compression, which reduces you consumption. You have to pay for a VPN service, but some (eg "Ace VPN") are quite cheap.

Websessions Postpaid Customer?

I have been using websessions for a few weeks now, paying the 9,95 for 7 days of service from prepaid CallYa credit. A few times I have gone over the 1gb limit expecting my session to end; however, I was able to continue surfing until the 7 days were up. After the days had expired, I checked my credit to see if I got billed extra for going over 1gb and my CallYa credit was only 9,95 lower.
I must have misconfigured something, after reading this I am beginning to think that I have not been connecting through event.vodafone.de. I am not sure how I can even check this. My question is, since I load the internet from prepaid CallYa credit without any contract how can I get billed further? Will I get a physical bill in the mail? If so, how long after booking the websessions can I expect to receive a bill? How much do they charge if you go over 1gb/connect through a method other than event.vodafone.de? I am totally confused by this situation, so your insight is appreciated.

Sorry a quick ammendment to the above post, I pay for my websessions using CallNow prepaid credit which I purchased from the Vodafone store. Moreover, I am using the websessions on my laptop. A few weeks ago when I purchased the websessions SIM Card/USB I came home and simply plugged the unit in, went through the installation stages and began surfing the web after loading a week's session from the CallNow credit. I really don't understand why it doesn't end my session when I hit 1gb and I am worried that I may end up with a bill somehow.

The information is still generally accurate as of August 2009. The megabyte price has changed to 0.1 UAH per MB.
Another issue is speed and network quality. EDGE is available everywhere (no 3G!) and maximum speed is 25kBs down with sometimes terrible latency up to 3000ms (the best values are around 600-700ms). The upload speed is usually slower, but this varies from time to time and from palce to place.
The UMC/MTS network in Kiev is heavily loaded, so connection can slow down significantly depending on daytime or be lost/disconnected. Often it is difficult to download a file larger than 20MB and such activities should be shifted into hours after 22:00/10PM.

hey guys, me again. Final entry as I am now in Spain. Weirdest thing, I tried again this morning and everything works now for free. Fring, Mobiweather, Teethring with laptop. Its really weird. If I were you, I would not top up too much and check on my balance regularly.Orange has been spotty in some areas and, as mentioned previouisly, sometimes, your credit just vanishes. Just a heads up.

hey guys, also posted the last thread in Orange Mobicarte. Decided to play around with the sim card and find out what else Orange changed. Its all bad news, unfortunately. When using your mobile, if you do not use Opera Mini as a browser, you get charged per minute even if you are in any of the unlimited plans. I have a Nokia E52 and, when I used the Nokia browser to surf, I got charged. But if I used Opera Mini, no charge. I also have a program called MobiWeather installed. usually, I do not get charged whenever I update the weather on my phone. Now, I do get charged. When using Nokia OVI maps, I used to not get charged. Not anymore now. I get charged when using Nokia Maps. More importantly, I used to never get charged when I attached it to my USB modem/dongle and use my computer. Now, I get charged ! It seems like its time based and not data based though. Now, I am not 100% sure if this is because I just signed up for the free internet weekends thats why there are so many exceptions. Maybe if I just signed up for internet day, it would be different. I highly doubt it, though. It looks like Orange has stopped being an attractive source for prepaid mobile internet in France. Would be great if somebody could verify my findings and offer alternatives.

hello guys, In Cahors France and I will tell you my complete experience with the prepaid Mobicarte from Orange. Arrived in Lyon on October 4 and immediately went to the Orange shop and purchased a sim card for 15 euro. I also purchased 25 euro worth of credit (you get an extra 10 euro if you buy 25). First up, the unlimited internet option thing is now not available. What is available are the following. Internet Day for 3 euro which starts from 2am up to 23:59PM, Internet weekends for 5 euro which starts at midnight on fridays and ends midnight Monday. Finally, there is INTERNET MAX which is unlimited internet at NIGHTS from 8PM to 8AM the next day. I believe this is 6 or 9 euros and I think it is valid for three weeks. I am not sure about this, though. You get to choose these options by the #123# method explained above. Ok, anyway, aside from web surfing a day, I use FRING constantly. ITS on all the time. What I would do is choose the daily INTERNET option for 3 euros a day. Since I was going to stay in france for more than a month, I went on and loaded a 75 euro mobicarte so that I could get 25 euro extra. Seems like a good deal. Everything was working perfectly with Fring, Phone browsing, and even plugging the SIM directly to the computer. Until today. Its October 24 and, this afternoon, to my shock, I noticed that I had zero credits left. So, I went to the Orange strore in Cahors and tried to find out what was going on. Long story short, as of today, they started charging me for FRING use. I guess they got smart to the whole VOIP or chat 24/7 idea so now, when I use fring, I get charged a ridiculously high amoung ( 1 euro per minute). Now, the funny thing is that if I use the phone to just surf ( opera browser ), I do not get charged at all. Its only when you use FRING that they get you. Anybody know a way around this?

I am in Greece (October 2009) and have bought two NS 7 data packages from WIND on the island of RHODES.
The first transaction went perfectly. I bought a SIM card for €5, added an extra €15 credit and then bought a 7-day/24gb service by sending NS 7 to 19595.
Everything worked perfectly but the maximum download was 50k and upload 10k. I was using an HSDPA mobile and the speed never improved.
Here is the warning. Once the 7-day period was over I added more credit and bought another NS 7 package. Disaster.
First of all my credit was reduced by €8 because I had continued to use the mobile beyond the 7 day period.....even though I monitored the start/stop of the 7-day period.
Well you learn things! Then the following day the data connection stopped working and I went to a WIND shop.
They then told me that I hadn't successfully registered the second time for NS 7. I showed them the text message requesting the service and they said this often happens.
The staff then called customer service - they were on hold for 64 minutes - and got them to rest my account balance and give me back the credit. All was to be confirmed by text 1 hour later.........I'm still waiting for the text.
So I dumped my SIM, bought a new one and started all over again.
Buyer beware!

The option has changed to what our contributor wrote at 5:15AM. I realised that two weeks ago when Orange sent me one SMS saying that it'll be discontinued by 24th this month (because I activated it on 25th June when in France)
Now, besides the two BP options, there is till one Option Internet left in the menu. This option costs 6 € and is valid only from 8pm till 8am for web browsing and unlimited time on Orange World. There is no limit on data, as for now.
Now, the SIM card costs 15 € with preloaded 5€ talk time. I assume it's standard pricing at all Orange shops. The SIM card will be deactivated in 4 months from your initial activation (without recharge) and 10 months from the day you recharge.
You can recharge online using Orange portal, but only French issued CB (Carte Bancaire) will be accepted. So, it is advisable to purchase recharge coupons if you plan to keep your number usable until your next trip to France. Alternatively, you can try to call your Orange number voicemail to keep it active.
