US - ATTThis is a featured page

AT&T (formerly Cingular) has a prepaid SIM to which mobile web browsing options can be added. Currently there are the following options:

  • 1MB = $4.99 / month
  • 5MB = $9.99 / month
  • 100MB = $19.99 / month. For details see here. AT&T stopped the unlimited plan in Nov 08 and only offers a pre-paid 100MB option for $19.99. You activate this multiple times a month. Tested and works with unlocked iPhone in December '09 (but you need to Change the APN - see below).
In addition there seem to be the following options:

  • DataConnect Day Pass (75 MB) - $15
  • DataConnect Week Pass (250 MB) - $30
  • DataConnect Month Pass (500 MB) - $50

For details see: www.att.com/buyasession

Misc information:

  • The options are activated by calling 611 (a voice recognition system). Select "Feature Packages" and then "MediaNet".
  • Also with 611 you can check you account balance and data-option (also amount of recouring data) - select "check my feature packages"
  • With USSD *777# (and Dial-Button) you can check your account balance

To Change the APN on an Iphone you can follow this instructions:

Find an open wireless access point.
Browse tohttp://www.unlockit.co.nz/from the iphone.
Select "Use Custom" and pick "US - AT&T" from the scroll list.
Install the new APN.
Turn off 3G.
Turn flight mode on and then off.
Data works.

  • The following username
  • The Pay-As-You Go offer is described here, but information on the MediaNet options is scarce.

  • All add-ons seem to be for mobile browsing only, but the phone can be used as a modem for a notebook (last checked June 2008). iPhone tethered to laptop with the 100MB plan and APN listed above with no issues. Only http and https were accessed though, so other protocols are unknown. (June 09)

  • The ATT homepage does not mention if other services suchs as POP/SMTP, etc. are available. In practice, POP/SMTP and also IPSec for VPNs is possible (last checked June 2008).

  • Network: GSM/EDGE in 1900 and 850 MHz, 3G in same bands.

I bought my AT&T prepaid card in an official AT&T Shop (Dec 2009). The shop "expert" told me that specially for the iPhone the MediaNet is not working (anyhow i took it and it worked after changing the APN). The inital card is for free - but i must charge 25$ for voice and 19.99$ for Data 100 MB - so the total was 44.99+3.15Tax. But the MediaNet service was activated immidiatly (i tried it about 2 hours later). The card is only valid for 3 month. You need no ID-Card.
The saleman also told me i can use the "official" contract offers - but without contract (everytime canelation possible) - but i must bring my own hardware.

Anonymous Pay As you Go Data Access 0 Jan 30 2010, 10:31 PM EST by Anonymous

Thread started: Jan 30 2010, 10:31 PM EST  Watch
Hi, a few users have been reporting that as on Jan 20, 2010, ATT has disabled Data Access using the methods discussed in the article, i.e., changing the APN. Any suggestions on a new workaround to access data using the Pre-Paid Pay As You Go Plan?

The first AT&T store I went to in New York wouldn’t sell me a SIM card because I didn’t have an ID from the USA. The second The AT&T store wanted to charge me $25 just for the SIM card. Then they couldn’t get it to work in my iPhone. Spent about 3 hours there. Then called these guys www.usasims.com, they sold me a SIM card for $5 less, once I received it they helped me get my iPhone running. They key is the APN SETTINGS they need to be exactly as above. Major lesson learnt, don’t waste your time at the AT&T store. They are a bunch of blazing idiots

Check out T-Mobile's Prepaid Sidekick plan - that will get you unlimited data with voice at .15/min. Since it's not AT&T, and they don't yet support iPhone, they shouldn't have any sniffers or blocks against iPhone. It's $1/day each day you access (minimum $30), and there are some moderate additional fees.
