SwedenThis is a featured page

This page acts as a node in the navigation bar on the left to group all information about Internet access via 2G/3G in Sweden.

The main 3G operators in Sweden are Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre (3). Telia and Tele2 share the same network, Telenor and 3 have their own networks.

The cheapest on the go provider is Tre (three (3) in Swedish) with about 10 SEK/MB. The others charge between 15-25 SEK / MB.

It seems that the only operator not requiring registration (and a Swedish id number) is Telenor.

Update 1:

Telia offers a PAYG startpaket at 99 kr (approx £10.00) a week for unlimited 3G surfing. You need to sign up for a full package though, and I think they're only available for Swedish residents (my Swedish father-in-law signed up the paperwork). Each segment lasts 1 week only, then you have to text the word VECKOSURF to 4466 to activate the 3G for another week). The SIM lasts 1 year.

Update 2:

You can get an unlimited prepaid for data from 3 without a Swedish id. The cost is very reasonable
and you can activate a plan for a day, week or month. The only rub is that you (probably)
have to purchase a USB-modem for 900SEK. I'm not 100% sure about the latter. Go to a '3' Boutique
for more details. Could not find info on the web.

I got the modem and all and it works fine.

Update 2.2:

I recently got a prepaid SIM card for 3G internet access from Tre (aka "3") without being a Swedish citizen. I did not have to get the modem, so the SIM cost me 99 SEK (about 10€ or 13USD) and included seven days of unlimited internet access. (They supposingly cap the data speed to GPRS once you reach some data traffic volume which should be somewhere in the several-GB dimension, but I have not seen this and the very friendly and helpful Tre employer could not give me details, either.) I have not tried to top it up, but will try that soon and then update this information, also about using Tre 3G in remote swedish areas. You can get these SIM cards at The Phone Shop, and if they are out of them, you can find them at any Tre booth. I got mine in Stockholm's Gallerian mall next to Sergel torg. (Beware that you need to change the APN in the configuration to net.tre.se if you use the Mac OS X software on the data partition of the modem, since it seems to be set to bredand.tre.se or something by default. They might eventually change this flaw, though.)

Update 3:
Telia's prepaid SIM card, as mentioned in "Update 1", costs 99 kr for a week of unlimited 3G, in addition to normal voice and SMS services. You do not need to be a Swedish resident; I signed up for mine at the Telia store near the Stockholm Central Train Station, didn't have a p-number nor an address then, and it all went fine. The SIM card itself costs 100 kr (I think). SIM expires 1 year from purchase or last top up.

This package is now a very popular choice for those who are on holiday around Sweden. You buy the kit, which comprises of a Huawei E1550 USB modem (3.6Mbps down and 384kbps up). It is locked to Tele2, but can be unlocked via http://www.dc-unlocker.com if you want to use it abroad as well. Anyway, the package includes a 1 day surf, but you can recharge it online via the modem's user interface per daily/weekly/monthly intervals. Package costs 299 sek (like €27). Daily fee is 29 sek, weekly is 89 sek and monthly is 249 sek. For those of you who already have a modem, you can buy the SIM card separately of course. If you need a good router to use the modem with for sharing the Internet connection, try the DOVADO UMR, sold in the same store:

Update: The Telia 99 SEK/Month for unlimited wireless 3G access is a supplementary offer to customers who have Telia adsl. It's not prepaid.

Update 2: You do not need to buy a 3 dongle to have a one or two week or one month unlimited data prepaid card. Cost in Oct 2008 was SEK 199 for one week and SEK 299 for two weeks. Beware of the dongles, they are sold at a discount and locked to 3.

No fuss about registration. Data and SMS only, no voice calls. Used it myself. Where there isn't 3 UMTS coverage, you roam for free on another operator's network for gprs and edge.
