I have been using websessions for a few weeks now, paying the 9,95 for 7 days of service from prepaid CallYa credit. A few times I have gone over the 1gb limit expecting my session to end; however, I was able to continue surfing until the 7 days were up. After the days had expired, I checked my credit to see if I got billed extra for going over 1gb and my CallYa credit was only 9,95 lower.
I must have misconfigured something, after reading this I am beginning to think that I have not been connecting through event.vodafone.de. I am not sure how I can even check this. My question is, since I load the internet from prepaid CallYa credit without any contract how can I get billed further? Will I get a physical bill in the mail? If so, how long after booking the websessions can I expect to receive a bill? How much do they charge if you go over 1gb/connect through a method other than event.vodafone.de? I am totally confused by this situation, so your insight is appreciated.

Sorry a quick ammendment to the above post, I pay for my websessions using CallNow prepaid credit which I purchased from the Vodafone store. Moreover, I am using the websessions on my laptop. A few weeks ago when I purchased the websessions SIM Card/USB I came home and simply plugged the unit in, went through the installation stages and began surfing the web after loading a week's session from the CallNow credit. I really don't understand why it doesn't end my session when I hit 1gb and I am worried that I may end up with a bill somehow.

You can dial phone numbers with some 3G modems through their dashboard software. E.g. some Huawei devices like the E169 or the E180 support voice calling.
In any case you can send USSD-commands from just any data device. If your dashboard software doesn't support USSD, you need to use a tool called MDMA and if your modem is not compatible with MDMA, you need to send USSD-commands by an AT-command. For both issues you may refer to the 3G modem wiki: http://3g-modem.wetpaint.com/
If you can't place calls with a prepaid Vodafone SIM, then you have a special data SIM, which was sold bundled with a 3G modem. However this article refers to Vodafone prepaid cards in general, which includes CallYa SIMs, which are voice capable.

No, that won't work, as the WAP proxy, which is obligatory for CallYa InternetFlat, allows only http-traffic on port 80 and 8080. So except for browsing web pages, you can't use any other service.

I am in Berlin now and thanks to the advice here I have excellent internet coverage from the moment I arrived. I bought a SIM on eBay.de for 12 Euros including shipment to Sweden. There was 10 Euro balance in it. Worked excellent from the first minute in Germany.

So, please tell me if I have this straight. I can buy the SIM chip, stick it into my laptop's SIM compatible PCMCIA slot and access up to 1GB of data perday for only 4.95Euro. I am only interested in Germany at this point.

Yes, you just need to configure event.vodafone.de as APN, establish a connection and open some random web page. No matter what address you enter, you'll be redirected to the Vodafone WebSessions portal, where you can order your desired WebSession, which can be paid by the prepaid credit, special WebSession vouchers or directly by credit card. So if you own a credit card you don't need to top up your SIM's credit in order to use WebSessions, but you can pay directly for each session. But you may also be interested in Fonic, who offer a dayflat for just € 2.50 ( http://prepaid-wireless-internet-access.wetpaint.com/page/Germany+-+Fonic), however Fonic charges by day and not by 24 hours as Vodafone does. If you plan to access the internet on more than 4 days, you should consider getting a SIM from Tchibo ( http://prepaid-wireless-internet-access.wetpaint.com/page/Germany+-+Tchibo), who offer 30 days for just € 19.95. During a promotional offer valid until May 12th, Tchibo offer their SIM card including 50 free minutes for the first month plus 10 free SMS monthly for the first year for absolutely free including free shipping. Unfortunately they ship only within Germany. To order go to http://www.tchibo.de/maedchen put the SIM into your shopping cart ("in den Warenkorb legen"), check out ("Warenkorb / Kasse") and enter "NEWSIM" as discount code (input field below "Geschenkkarte / Gutschein einlösen") and redeem it ("einlösen").

Hi!
Any Vodafone Germany prepaid SIM will do. In most countries outside Germany, speed is limited to around 500 kbit/s. I suspect this has something to do with the protocol version they use to exchange subscriber information between countries. In Austria, the latest version seems to be used as I can get full HSPA speeds there. Worthless in practice since there are now good 'native' prepaid SIMs available in Austria for Internet access. But 500 kbit/s is not too shabby anyway so I have no problem with it.
Cheers, Martin

I purchased a CallNow card in Germany. It works very well in the UK. In France, however, SFR does not seem to provide service. (Last tested 18 Sep 07 in Nice area). This is a real shame as it is impossible to get a pre-paid card with a data package from any of the french providers.
