Overview:
A1 offers the B.Free Breitband (broadband) as SIM only or with an HSDPA USB-modem package. A1 B.Free is the prepaid brand of Telekom Austria (A1), currently the mobile network with the best coverage in Austria.

Price, rates, options:
19,90€ including 1GB to be used within 12 months (July 2009).
For reload you can choose
either 20€ for 1GB and 12 months validity
or 10€ for 150MB and 1 month validity
or B.free20 which is 20cent/MB

APN: a1.net
Username: ppp@A1plus.at
Password: ppp
Primary DNS: 194.48.124.200 (not necessarily to be set)
secondary DNS: 194.48.139.254(not necessarily to be set)
Prepaid credit: *101#

Activation:
There is no special activation necessary. Just buy the card at any A1 Store with no ID or what so ever for 14.95€, insert the SIM to your Phone or Data Card, it will start working in a few minutes.
Telephone-No. of Customer-Support is given in the booklet coming with the SIM Card.

Traffic check and Top-Up:
When connected via the SIM card go to this page to verify how much data can still be used, when the offer expires and to top up

Misc:


  • A1 also sells starter packs for around € 100 that include a B.Free Broadband SIM card, a USB HSDPA modem, and 1 GB of data that can be consumed within 12 months.
  • Be aware that there are also "normal" B Free prepaid phone SIM card which cannot be used to use the data options (well you can but data download price for these around ist €15/ MB).
  • The specific "B.Free Breitband" SIM card is needed - It can also be used for voice calls but prices are very expensive (around 70 euro cents per minute).
  • After the initial 1 GB is used or expired you can choose from the options above.
  • After buying the SIM card I only had web page access for a couple of hours. Afterward, full access was granted. Whether this was a temporary failure or normal when first using the service is hard to tell.
This package has been tried in October 2008, and it worked more than great! The A1 3G coverage is really awesome!

The Vodafone Mobile Connect Stick E169 HSDPA (Huawei E169) modem that came with b.free in August 2008 was SIM-locked to A1.net, but I was able to easily unlock it with DC-Unlocker after my trip to Austria.

Used this during my skiing holiday in the last week of february. Very good reception and connection. No dropouts whatsoever.

The 15 euro for 1gb for 1 year deal is still active as of march 31, 2009. Speeds are very good and I am typing this out on a train from Salzburg to Bled and so far, no dropouts. Coverage seems to be excellent. Very happy with it. Was able to share this connection as well as I have a mobile router.
