I'm off to Austria tomorrow, from the UK for 2 weeks snowboarding, i just thought I'd check out the Vodafone roaming charges...expensive i think is the phrase...£5 for 15MB phone based browsing or £5/MB for modem based use. so id thought I'd check out the local prices and i remembered from one of your previous threads on mobilesociety, Martin, that you'd mentioned pre-paid data tariffs. i cant believe how reasonable the charges are, 20 Euros for up to 1GB is a pretty good deal, especially if you consider the cost of shipping 1000MB a £5/MB ! the only problem i have now, of course, is using my E51 which is locked to the Vodafone, UK, network.
This makes me wonder if the home grown networks like Vodafone and Orange even consider data roaming in their business plan, it is a small inconvenience indeed to purchase a data card whilst travelling, especially if one picks up the offered HSPA dongle for 90 euros too, which will reduce their data roaming revenue to zero (at least from me) It seems that they simply dont want us to roam with data, could it be that their interconnect partners are also charging them a fortune for the international data connectivity ? so what's the deal here, why are the roaming charges (both data and voice) so illogically high ? i'd be interested in anybodies thoughts on this Dave |
