Virgin uses the Optus 3G/yesG network which offers fairly decent coverage all over Australia. (In case you are wondering, the order of networks in Australia, in terms of 3G coverage, is (from best to worst): Telstra NextG > Optus 3G/yesG > Vodafone 3G > Three. In captial cities there is not much difference in coverage between all networks. For travel to regional centres, Three is not recommended, but other networks should be fine. For travel to remote areas, Telstra NextG is recommended.)
The Hauwei modem will switch between HSDPA/UTMS/GPRS depending on the best signal available. |

If you need hardware, the Virgin starter pack is AUD$149.00 which includes a Hauwei E169 USB modem and 300MB of data. The modem works on 900mhz and 2100mhz frequencies.
